The Witch
I honestly thought I already posted this from the contest earlier this year!
They used to throw stones They used to use string Skin and bones Then the flames came Licking and spitting Run from me, hide from me That’s what she said I’ll never be dead That’s what she said They used to throw stones They used to use rope Strung her up left with no hope Spitting and licking Her feet are kicking, kicking Her lips are twitching, twitching I’ll never go, she chokes, she chokes Then the flames die, she lets out a sigh Black, gray, white goes the smoke, smoke, smoke. They used to throw stones They used to use string Sticks and bones did swing They tried and tried Hung her up to dry Licking and spitting And she never did die. They used to use stones They used to use wood Sticks and bones Spirit in a hood She shifted and changed Each time she was hanged She’ll never be gone for good. Run from me, hide from me That’s what she said I’ll never be dead That’s what she said That’s what she said. So I gave her a root, a tendril to hold We are the same, meant to be bold Her blood sank into my soil Her last breath a gift My wood her new home Until the full moon shone. They used to use stone They used to use string Sticks and bones Swing from the tree Swinging from me A branch, sturdy and free Then the axes came singing Snipped me from root Nailed and splintered Roasted for winter. She’ll never die And neither will I.
